The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Goa, as the monsoon persists and progresses steadily. This alert signifies the expectation of heavy to very heavy rainfall for three consecutive days, starting from Tuesday. As per the forecast from the weather department, the orange alert will remain active on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. During this period, most areas in the state can anticipate moderate to heavy rainfall, while a few places may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The weather department has identified the development of cyclonic circulation in the northwest Bay of Bengal as the primary cause of the anticipated heavy rainfall. Furthermore, a low-pressure area has formed over north Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand, which will further enhance the monsoon activity in the region.
According to the weather department's forecast, on July 18, 21, and 22, the majority of places in the state can expect moderate to heavy rainfall. Similarly, on July 19 and 20, most areas in the state are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with a few places expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
As of Sunday, Goa had moderate rainfall in most areas, although heavy rainfall was observed in isolated places. On Sunday, the recorded rainfall in the state was 15.2 mm, which is considerably lower than the expected average rainfall of 42.21 mm.
Currently, Goa has a surplus of 11.4% in terms of overall rainfall since the beginning of the monsoon season on June 1. So far, the state has received 1,630.6 mm of rain, surpassing the normal average of 1,463.6 mm. Rainfall patterns in Goa vary across different districts. South Goa district has a surplus of 19.6% in comparison to the normal rainfall figures, while North Goa district has a departure of only 2.5% from the average. The state administration, along with the disaster management teams, is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to handle any emergencies caused by the heavy rainfall. It is strongly recommended that individuals stay away from low-lying areas, river banks, and other regions prone to flooding during this period.
