The "Vindhyagiri" project was officially launched on Thursday by President Droupadi Murmu in Kolkata, West Bengal, at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) site on the Hooghly River. The name was derived from the Karnataka mountain range - Vindhyagiri.
President Murmu was greeted in Kolkata by West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, who also appeared at the INS 'Vindhyagiri' launch event alongside Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The INS "Vindhyagiri" is a cutting-edge stealth frigate. 'Project 17 Alpha' saw the construction of seven ships for the Navy, this one being the sixth. Within the span of 2019 to 2022, the project's initial five ships were put into service.
The warship manufacturer in Kolkata was hired to build the Navy's third and final stealth frigate as part of the program.
According to the official, 75% of orders for P17A ship equipment and systems come from domestic companies, including MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises).
Before being given to the Indian Navy for commissioning into service, the cutting-edge ship will be outfitted with the newest technology and put through rigorous testing.
These warships, which included platform management systems, superior stealth features, and cutting-edge weaponry and sensors, were the successors of the Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class).
According to a GRSE spokesperson, P17A ships are directed missile frigates that are 149 meters long, weigh about 6,670 tonnes, and travel at a speed of 28 knots. Hazards in the three dimensions of the air, surface, and subsurface can be neutralized by these.
At the Raj Bhavan earlier in the day, the president introduced the "My Bengal, Addiction Free Bengal" campaign as part of the Brahma Kumaris' "Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan."
Following his election as president the previous year, Murmu is currently in West Bengal on a second visit. In March, she went there.
According to officials, security has been stepped up in the city in preparation for the president's visit, and traffic has been restricted on several roads.
