A devastating stampede near the Vishnu Nivasam temple in Tirupati on Wednesday evening claimed the lives of at least six devotees and left many injured. The tragedy unfolded as thousands of pilgrims gathered to secure tokens for the highly anticipated Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam, an annual sacred event at the revered Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple on Tirumala Hills.
What Happened?
The stampede occurred amid a chaotic situation during the distribution of tokens for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam, which begins on January 10. This 10-day festival allows devotees the unique opportunity to have a special darshan of Lord Venkateswara through the northern entrance, considered auspicious. The event draws lakhs of pilgrims from across the country, making it one of the most significant occasions in the temple calendar.
Thousands of devotees had assembled early Wednesday morning at designated counters, including one at MGM High School in Bairagipatteda. As the day progressed, the number of people swelled, and the situation became unmanageable. According to government officials, the stampede was triggered when a gate was opened to assist a distressed woman. The crowd surged forward, leading to a tragic loss of lives and injuries.
Crowd Surge and Token Distribution
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which oversees the temple's operations, had arranged for the distribution of 120,000 tokens for the first three days of the festival (January 10–12). These tokens allowed for ‘sarva darshan,’ a free opportunity to worship Lord Venkateswara. To manage the large turnout, the TTD set up special counters at 94 locations, including Vishnu Nivasam, Srinivasam, Bhudevi Complexes, and other sites in Tirupati.
Despite extensive planning, the overwhelming number of devotees created a stampede-like situation, particularly at Srinivasam, where crowds surged uncontrollably toward the counters. Officials admitted that the sheer scale of the gathering exceeded expectations, making it challenging to ensure the safety of devotees.
Government’s Response to the Tragedy
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, calling it shocking and tragic. In a heartfelt statement on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “The death of several devotees in a stampede near Vishnu Nivasam in Tirupati for tokens to visit Tirumala Srivari Vaikuntha Dwara has shocked me. This tragic incident, which took place at a time when devotees had gathered in large numbers for tokens, deeply disturbed me.”
The Chief Minister assured that all possible relief efforts were being carried out, with medical aid provided to the injured. He directed higher officials to take immediate measures to ensure better crowd management and prevent such tragedies in the future.
TTD Issues an Apology
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) expressed profound regret over the incident. Bhanu Prakash, a TTD board member, described the event as unfortunate and sought forgiveness from the devotees.
In a statement, Prakash acknowledged lapses in crowd management and vowed to take corrective measures to avoid such incidents. “Lives lost cannot be brought back, and we sincerely apologise to Srivari [Lord Venkateswara Swamy] devotees,” he said. He assured devotees that the TTD would review its protocols and implement stricter measures to ensure the safety of pilgrims.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the loss of lives. In a post from the PMO, he stated, “Pained by the stampede in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover soon. The AP Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his condolences, saying, “Pained by the unfortunate incident of the stampede in the Tirupati temple. My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. May the injured recover at the earliest.” Both leaders assured the Andhra Pradesh government of full support in managing the aftermath of the tragedy and extending aid to the victims.

While the TTD had made detailed arrangements, including setting up multiple counters for token distribution, the overwhelming turnout of devotees exposed gaps in planning and execution.
