The 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw a surge in new-generation leaders, leading to a slight shift in the political landscape. Among all the new candidates, the group that achieved monumental success includes Priya Saroj, Shambhavi Chaudhary, Sanjana Jatva, and Pushpendra Saroj. All of them are 25 years old and are slated to become Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. Other young leaders like Iqra Hasan, Priyanka Jarkiholi and Sayoni Ghosh also emerged victorious in their respective constituencies.
The under-representation of women candidates has been a topic of discussion throughout the elections. According to official data, only 9.6% of the total 8,337 candidates were women. Despite these figures, it is refreshing to see that the majority of young MPs are women.
Let’s get to know the young leaders
Priya Saroj
A 25-year-old Supreme Court lawyer who debuted this election on an SP ticket won the Machhlishahr by 35,850 votes. She celebrated her victory by defeating the incumbent BJP MP, Bholanath. Priya is the daughter of Tufani Saroj, who has himself been a three-time MP.
Sanjana Jatav
Sanjana Jatav emerged victorious in the Bharatpur constituency of Rajasthan by defeating the BJP’s candidate Ramswaroop Koli with a margin of 51,983 votes. Sanjana, hailing from the Dalit Community, is married to a Rajasthan Police Constable and is a mother of two children. She contested in the previous year's assembly elections in Rajasthan but narrowly lost to Ramesh Khedi of the BJP by a margin of only 409 votes.
Shambhavi Chaudhary
The daughter of Ashok Chaudhary, a minister in Nitish Kumar’s cabinet, Shambhavi has secured victory in the Samastipur constituency, Bihar. She comfortably defeated her opponent, Sunny Hazari, the son of Janata Dal (United) Minister Maheshwar Hazari, by a significant margin. She was contesting from the LJP(Ram Vilas) party.
Pushpendra Saroj
After being an SP member, he eventually debuted in the Kaushambhi Constituency and won by 1.03 lakh votes. He defeated the two-time BJP MP Vinod Sonkar to become the youngest male member of the Lok Sabha. His father, Inderjit Saroj, happens to be a member of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. With degrees in accounting and management, he claims that his sole focus will be on development.
Iqra Hasan
Another Samajwadi Party debutante candidate became MP after defeating BJP's Pradeep Chaudhary, in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana region, with a margin of 69,000 votes. With this victory, Iqra became the youngest Muslim MP in Lok Sabha. Deeply rooted in the politics of this region, her family, The Hasans are seen as political royalty in Kairana. Iqra holds a Bachelor's degree in History from Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, a law degree from Delhi University, and a Master's in International Law and Politics from SOAS.
Priyanka Jarkiholi
Priyanka Jarkiholi, a member of the Congress, secured a significant victory over incumbent MP Annasaheb Jolle of the BJP in the Chikkodi parliamentary seat. At 27 years old, she is poised to become one of the youngest MPs in the country. She acknowledges her father, PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, for her overwhelming victory. She is committed to enhancing the well-being and progress of the people in her constituency.
Saayoni Ghosh
In West Bengal's Jadavpur constituency, Saayoni Ghosh emerged victorious after defeating her nearest rival, BJP's Anirban Ganguly by over 2,58,201 votes. Saayoni began her career at 17 as a Bengali actress and singer, and more recently entered politics, securing a seat with TMC. In June 2021, she was appointed as the president of Trinamool Congress' Youth Wing, after Abhishek Banerjee was relieved of the duty.
