The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) data recently shows that US citizens have lost more than $10 billion in 2022 alone due to phishing calls made by call centres illegally operating out of India.
The victims have been known to be primarily from the age group of 60 years and above. Elderly US citizens have lost over $3 billion in different kinds of scams. The FBI has deputed a permanent representative at the US Embassy in New Delhi to work with the CBI, Interpol, and the Delhi Police to book the perpetrators.
Losses due to "tech-based" crimes have spiralled in the last 2 years where almost $3 billion has been lost.
Call centres in India have been a major contributor to the country's economy and have played a significant role in its growing service sector. Many companies, particularly those in the United States and other Western countries, have outsourced their customer service and other business processes to call centres in India due to the availability of a large, English-speaking workforce at relatively low wages.
Indian call centres have been known for their ability to provide 24/7 service to customers around the world. However, in recent times the number of fraud and scams involving Indian call centres has increased.
It is important for companies to carefully select and monitor their call centre partners to ensure the protection of their customers and the integrity of their business.
