The Delhi government is set to launch a month-long campaign to tackle industrial pollution in the city starting on October 20. Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced that 66 teams have been formed to monitor the fuels used in over 1,700 industrial units in the capital. Despite these units having shifted to natural gas, the government aims to ensure there is no negligence on their part.
The Minister has also called for a complete ban on firecrackers and the restriction of movement to only CNG and electric vehicles in the National Capital Region (NCR) to combat air pollution.
He highlighted in a letter to the Centre that the Delhi government's efforts alone will not be successful until bordering states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh address the causes of air pollution in the NCR area. According to a survey by the Centre for Science and Environment, just 31% of the pollution in Delhi is produced locally, with the remaining 69% coming from NCR states.
Mr. Rai has urged the Centre to hold an emergency meeting to discuss solutions to the factors contributing to air pollution in the national capital. He also called for a complete ban on firecrackers and stubble burning in the entire NCR region, with only CNG and electric vehicles being allowed.
