In a significant move, the United States has approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, who is accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Former US President Donald Trump announced the decision during a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that Rana, described as a "very evil person," would be handed over to Indian authorities to face justice.
What Happened?
The US Supreme Court cleared the path for Rana's extradition by rejecting his final legal appeal on January 21, 2025. This decision concluded a long legal battle fought by Rana against his extradition. India has been seeking Rana's extradition for years, accusing him of assisting David Coleman Headley, a key conspirator in the Mumbai attacks, in gathering intelligence.
Who is Tahawwur Rana?
Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, was arrested in Chicago in 2009 for his role in a Pakistan-based terror network. While he was convicted in the US for supporting the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), he was acquitted of direct involvement in the Mumbai attacks. Rana is known to be associated with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the 26/11 attacks. Headley, who was sentenced to 35 years in a US prison, used Rana’s immigration consultancy as a cover to visit India and identify potential targets, including the Taj Hotel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai.
What was the Mumbai Terror Attack?
The 2008 Mumbai attacks were a series of terrorist attacks that took place in November 2008, in which 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), an Islamic terrorist organisation based in Pakistan, carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai. The attacks resulted in the death of 166 people, including six Americans, and left hundreds injured.
What's Next?
With all legal hurdles cleared, a team from India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) is expected to travel to the US to finalize the extradition process. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that Indian authorities are in touch with US officials to work out the logistics of Rana's surrender. Once extradited, Rana is expected to face trial in India for his alleged involvement in the attacks.
Why is This Important?
The extradition of Tahawwur Rana highlights the strengthening counterterrorism cooperation between the United States and India. It also demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks are held accountable. Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation for the US’s decision, and a US State Department statement affirmed long-standing support for India's efforts to ensure justice for the victims of the Mumbai terrorist attacks.
