During the early hours of Friday, in a shocking twist, the Supreme Court of India's official YouTube channel was hacked, reports say. Hackers used the platform, according to reports, to promote the XRP cryptocurrency developed by Ripple Labs, an American company.
Live Streams Replaced with Crypto Content
Traditionally, it had been used for live-streaming court proceedings over public interest and constitution bench hearings. However, post the hacking incident, it began broadcasting videos on cryptocurrency, such as "Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds to the SEC's $2 Billion Fine! XRP PRICE PREDICTION.
The hacking incident had happened at a point when it was doing the live broadcast of a major case, where an alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata was being tried.
Supreme Court action is taken:
The channel was disabled right away, and the Registry of the Supreme Court admitted that this was indeed a breach, while the issue was entrusted to the IT team and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to investigate the problem and secure the channel.
Key Proceedings in Supreme Court Disrupted by this Incident
This hack took place on a day when many high-profile cases were to be taken up for hearing. A PIL was seeking to settle a certain time frame for the appointment of judges, and there was a plea from the Muslim side on the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute challenging a verdict by the Allahabad High Court.
Live Streaming: A Watershed in the Quest of Transparency.
This Supreme Court YouTube channel became important in 2018 when it marked a historic occasion by broadcasting the live Constitution bench hearings. It was a step forward for judicial proceedings to increasingly see more transparency in them, as then Chief Justice UU Lalit initiated this idea.
