Stranded Tourists Rescued from Atal Tunnel

On Thursday, hundreds of tourist vehicles carrying over 2,000 tourists that were stranded at the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang Pass following snowfall were rescued in late night operations that lasted for eight hours from 5pm to 1am.

Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti police helped the tourists and their drivers in getting their vehicles to safer places. 

The last vehicle was sent towards Solang valley at about 1am.

The Atal Tunnel is a highway tunnel in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The tunnel is located at an altitude of 3,000 metres (9,800 feet) and is the longest highway tunnel in the country, at a length of 9.02 kilometres (5.6 miles). It is located in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas and connects the Manali Valley to the Lahaul and Spiti valleys.

The bus full of tourists and many more [passengers was stranded for about 12 hours, as it started snowing. The police had to stop 100 vehicles at the North Portal of the tunnel at Sissu at 4pm, but about 300 vehicles including three tourist buses and 25 Tempo Travellers, were stranded at the South Portal.
