Amidst the havoc created by the flash floods in the Himalayan state of Sikkim, a beacon of hope in the form of rescuers finding 62 missing people alive, has been lightened in the hearts of victims and concerned authorities.
However, 141 people are still missing and the death toll of poor residents being killed has reached a disappointing number of 55.
Family members of those missing, especially tourists are still waiting for their loved ones to be founded by authorities amidst the constant lifting of survivors by helicopters. Dozens of army personnel too are reported to be missing.
Chief Minister of the State, Prem Singh Tamang has told PTI that the state has incurred damage worth a thousand crores of rupees. Though a committee has to be formed before the actual figures can be stated.
The central government has released a grant of around 44.8 crores to the state, as announced by Union Home Minister, Amit Shah while also announcing the formation of Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) for inspection and assessment of the affected regions of Sikki.
This misery began on 4th October when the ongoing heavy rains caused the outburst of the glacial South Lhonak Lake of Sikkim. The lake breached its banks, causing the destruction of Teesta III Dam at Chungthang, leading to floods. The floods has also ignited the debate over Hydel projects which arebeing developed in the state in partnership with Private players.
