The alleged assault on doctors and medical staff at a civic hospital in Maharashtra's Thane district has triggered widespread outrage, reigniting concerns over the safety of healthcare workers and the growing incidents of violence inside hospitals. The controversy, which erupted after a video of the incident went viral on social media, culminated in the arrest of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) corporator Ramesh Mhatre, while three of his associates were also taken into custody.
The incident took place at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)-run Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli, where Mhatre, accompanied by supporters and relatives of a pregnant patient, allegedly assaulted a woman doctor and other members of the hospital staff following a dispute over medical treatment.
What happened at KDMC's Shastrinagar Hospital?
According to the police and hospital authorities, the confrontation began after relatives of a pregnant woman accused the medical staff of delaying treatment. Hospital officials have maintained that the patient was being attended to according to established medical protocols and that there was no negligence in her care.
As tensions escalated, Mhatre allegedly entered the hospital premises with several supporters. CCTV footage, which later surfaced online, purportedly shows the corporator pushing, slapping and verbally abusing a woman doctor, while other staff members, including nurses and security personnel, were also allegedly assaulted during the altercation. The disturbing visuals quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing condemnation from the medical fraternity and political leaders alike.
Hospital staff alleged that the assault occurred while doctors were attending to patients, disrupting emergency medical services and creating panic within the facility.
Doctors launch protest, demand action
The incident prompted an immediate backlash from doctors and healthcare workers across the KDMC hospital network. Medical professionals staged protests and suspended routine outpatient department (OPD) services in several civic hospitals to demand strict action against those responsible.
Emergency services continued to function, but doctors insisted that attacks on healthcare professionals had become increasingly common and required stronger legal protection and swift enforcement.
Medical associations argued that healthcare workers routinely face verbal abuse and physical violence despite working under immense pressure, particularly in government hospitals that handle large patient volumes. The latest incident, they said, highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security arrangements and stricter implementation of laws protecting doctors.
Woman doctor's family recounts trauma
The emotional impact of the incident became evident after the assaulted doctor's parents spoke publicly about her condition.
According to them, their daughter remains deeply shaken by the attack and is afraid to return to work. They described her as being in a state of shock, saying she had dedicated herself to serving patients but instead became the victim of violence while on duty.
The family questioned how doctors could continue performing their responsibilities if they were not guaranteed basic workplace safety. They also appealed to the authorities to ensure that those responsible are punished so similar incidents do not recur.
FIR registered against corporator and supporters
Following mounting public pressure and protests by doctors, police registered an FIR against Ramesh Mhatre and several others.
Initially, three associates accused of participating in the assault were arrested, while the corporator himself had not been taken into custody immediately, prompting criticism from sections of the medical community and opposition leaders.
KDMC Commissioner Abhinay Goyal confirmed that an FIR had been filed and assured doctors that legal action would be taken against everyone named in the complaint.
Police officials also stated that the corporator would be arrested in accordance with the law after the investigation progressed.
Ramesh Mhatre arrested after public outrage
Amid growing protests and widespread criticism, Vishnunagar Police arrested Ramesh Mhatre from his residence on Wednesday.
Police confirmed that the corporator had been named in the FIR along with five others in connection with the alleged assault on doctors and hospital employees. His arrest came less than 24 hours after healthcare workers intensified their protests demanding equal treatment under the law regardless of political affiliation.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and further legal action will depend on evidence collected during the probe.
Viral video fuels nationwide anger
The CCTV footage became central to the public reaction.
The video appears to show Mhatre confronting hospital staff before allegedly striking the woman doctor. Other individuals accompanying him can also be seen engaging in a scuffle with hospital employees as staff members attempt to defuse the situation.
The visuals intensified demands for immediate action, with many doctors' organisations stating that such incidents undermine confidence in public healthcare institutions and discourage medical professionals from serving in government hospitals.
The incident also sparked widespread debate on social media over the increasing frequency of attacks on doctors and whether existing legal protections are sufficient.
Political reactions
The incident drew responses from leaders across the political spectrum.
While several political figures condemned the assault, Shiv Sena MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde reportedly stated that strict action should be taken against anyone found guilty, irrespective of political affiliation.
However, remarks by Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad defending the corporator's actions as something that happened "in anger" attracted criticism, with many arguing that no circumstance could justify physical assault on medical professionals performing their duties.
The episode has also renewed questions about accountability when elected representatives are accused of misconduct and whether swift legal action is taken irrespective of political status.
Violence against doctors remains a growing concern
The assault has once again highlighted the persistent challenge of ensuring workplace safety for healthcare professionals in India.
Doctors' organisations have repeatedly pointed out that violence often erupts after emotionally charged situations involving critically ill patients or perceived delays in treatment. Public hospitals, especially civic institutions, frequently operate under heavy patient loads and limited resources, making tensions more likely.
Medical experts argue that while patient grievances deserve prompt attention, disputes should never escalate into physical attacks. They have called for stronger hospital security, quicker police intervention and stricter enforcement of laws protecting healthcare workers.
Several associations have also urged governments to establish zero-tolerance policies against violence in hospitals, warning that repeated attacks could discourage young professionals from joining public healthcare services.
Investigation continues
Police are continuing to examine CCTV footage, witness statements and other evidence to determine the role of each accused in the incident.
Authorities have indicated that further arrests could follow if additional evidence emerges during the investigation. Meanwhile, doctors have said they expect the case to be pursued transparently and without political interference.
For now, the arrest of the corporator has helped ease some of the immediate tension, but healthcare workers insist that lasting reforms are necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As Maharashtra's medical community watches the investigation unfold, the KDMC hospital assault has become more than an isolated criminal case—it has evolved into a broader conversation about the safety, dignity and protection of doctors who continue to serve on the frontlines despite increasing workplace risks.
