Seemapuri Building Collapse: Several Feared Trapped After Five-Storey Building Comes Down in Delhi

A five‑storey building collapsed in the Seemapuri area of Delhi on Wednesday. An official says several people are feared to be trapped under the rubble. Rescue work is still going on.

What we know about the Seemapuri building collapse

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) says it received a call about the collapse at around 3:30 p.m. And sent fire engines to the site. Images from the spot show a crowd standing on the debris with people trying to shift slabs with their bare hands while professional teams worked alongside them. The number of people trapped has not been confirmed in the report we have seen. We will update this once officials share a figure.

Rescue operation under way

Residents were the first to respond. One local said that four to five people had already been pulled out by neighbours and taken to hospital and that a child was still trapped when they spoke. The same resident said they had given CPR to a person themselves and claimed police arrived about half an hour after the collapse. That is one persons account. We have no official response to it yet.

Traffic advisory for Seemapuri

Delhi Traffic Police has asked people to stay from the area so ambulances and rescue vehicles can move quickly. It said traffic is affected around Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, DLF Bhopura and nearby roads. Drivers have been told not to stop, park or gather near the site and to follow the instructions of traffic personnel.

What caused the Seemapuri building collapse?

Some locals say the building had developed cracks after tremors were felt across Delhi‑NCR on Tuesday night linked to an earthquake in Uttarakhand. Officials have not confirmed this. They say the actual cause will only be known after an investigation so it would be premature to draw any conclusion.

A second major incident in a month

The collapse comes a month after a hostel tragedy in Satya Niketan, which killed seven people and injured several others. Two serious incidents in such a time are likely to put fresh pressure on the authorities over building safety in the capital.

What happens next

Rescue teams are still working to reach anyone under the debris. Once the operation ends an inquiry into the cause is expected. We will update this report with confirmed casualty numbers, official statements and any announcement, on relief or compensation.
