Following unrest before Chief Minister N Biren Singh's arrival, the Manipur government has prohibited large gatherings and halted mobile internet connections in the Churachandpur district. Prior to Singh's arrival, a crowd vandalised and set fire to the location of his scheduled event in the state's Churachandpur district on Thursday. Today, Singh was slated to speak at a gathering there.
The decision was made in response to a police report citing the "likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquilly, and grave danger to human lives and properties" in the district, according to an order issued on Thursday by Additional District Magistrate S Thienlatjoy Gangte for Churachandpur district.
The enraged mob managed to partially flame the recently installed open gym at PT Sports facility in New Lamka, which Biren Singh is scheduled to inaugurate on Friday afternoon, according to the police, even though the neighbourhood police soon sprung into action and dispersed the throng.
However, the authorities have not yet made it official whether or not the programme has been cancelled.
To protest the state government's eviction drive from the protected and reserve forests, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) has called for an eight-hour shutdown in the Churachandpur district on Friday starting at 8 a.m.
In a statement, the ITLF stated that they had sent the state government many memos outlining their complaints and concerns on the survey the government had conducted regarding reserve forests and protected forests, wetlands and animals, as well as the eviction of people.
In three districts that were also purportedly supported by Kuki militants, tribal groups held protest marches against the state administration on March 10 in response to this claim.
Five individuals were hurt as a peaceful demonstration in the districts of Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal became violent.
The state government's assault on poppy growing and the invasion of forest area was the target of the demonstrations.
Three churches in Manipur were destroyed earlier this month by the state administration, which claimed they were "illegal constructions".
Even though the Union Home Ministry has not yet given its approval to the state government's choice, the Manipur government unilaterally withdrew from the tripartite talks and suspension of operations (SoO) signed with three Kuki militant outfits, the Kuki National Army (KNA), Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), and Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA), after the March 10 incidents.
Additionally, it was claimed that KNA, ZRA, and KRA cadres are inciting state-level growers of marijuana to rebel against the government, which has been bringing legitimate and illegal marijuana growers to task, and burning marijuana crops on forest property, particularly in reserve and protected forests.
An umbrella group for the Kuki outfits, though, has denied the allegations.
Numerous Kuki-Chin terrorist organisations are based in the mountainous and wooded Churachandpur area of southern Manipur, which borders Myanmar and Mizoram.
