The 'Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao' slogan was misspelt in Hindi in a video that went viral on social media, placing Union Minister Savitri Thakur at the epicentre of a recent controversy. The incident happened on June 18 at the 'School Chalo Abhiyan' event, which was hosted by Thakur, the chief guest, at a government school in Bramha Kundi, Dhar, Madhya Pradesh.
Using this error , the opposition Congress has questioned Thakur's qualifications and suitability for the office of Minister of State for Women and Child Development. In the video, Thakur—a Dhar native and member of the Lok Sabha—is seen scrawling the message on a whiteboard in the wrong script in Devanagari.
This has provoked a barrage of derision and satire. from political opponents and social media users alike.
An effort called 'School Chalo Abhiyan', which started in Uttar Pradesh, aims to encourage children to enrol in school and receive an education. The viral video, however, caused the event's focus to drastically change and unintentionally draw unfavourable attention to Thakur and the ruling party.
