Virender Singh Yadav, commonly known as Goonga Pehlwan and a Deaflympics gold medalist, has chosen to politely return his Padma Shri award in solidarity with wrestlers who oppose Sanjay Singh's election as president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Their fear derives from Sanjay Singh's friendship with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a close colleague of a former WFI chief.

Virender respectfully voiced his disagreement with Brij Bhushan's associate taking charge of the WFI, in solidarity with Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, who retired after the recent WFI polls. This action mirrors the stance of Bajrang Punia, a prominent figure in the protest, who also decided to return his Padma Shri.
