Sanjay Singh led WFI 'Suspended' for 'Complete Disregard for Rules' - Sports Ministry

The Union Sports Ministry, through an official release, announced on Sunday that the Wrestling Federation of India, led by newly elected president Sanjay Singh, has been suspended.

The Sports Ministry official informed PTI that the newly elected body of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) did not adhere to the WFI constitution.  Justifying its decision, Ministry stated that, On December 21, WFI's newly elected president, Sanjay Singh, announced the scheduling of U-15 and U-20 nationals in Nandini Nagar, Gonda (UP) before the year's end. However, it“didn't provide sufficient notice for wrestlers to prepare." Ministry highlighted the necessity of a 15-day notice for players to prepare adequately.

In its press release, The Sports Ministry stated that decisions regarding events like holding nationals are the prerogative of the Executive Committee. According to Article XI of the WFI constitution, which falls under 'Notices and Quorum for Meetings,' a minimum notice period of 15 clear days and a quorum of 1/3rd of representatives are necessary for a regular EC meeting. Even in the case of an Emergency EC meeting, the minimum notice period is 7 clear days, with the quorum requirement remaining at 1/3rd of representatives.

Sports Ministry emphasized that the decisions taken by the newly elected executive body of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) exhibit a clear disregard for established legal and procedural norms. These actions were cited as violations of both the WFI's constitutional provisions and the National Sports Development Code.

According to sources from the Ministry, clause 3 (e) of the preamble of the WFI constitution outlines the federation's objectives, including the organization of Senior, Junior, and Sub Junior National Championships in accordance with UWW Rules at locations chosen by the Executive Committee.

However, The Sports Ministry clarified that they haven't terminated the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) but rather suspended it until further orders. The key requirement for resolution is for the new body to comply with the due process and established rules.

The elections of WFI President on December 21 resulted in Sanjay Singh and his panel, loyalists of former president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, winning by significant margins.
