A devastating case of alleged medical negligence has come to light from the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, leaving a family completely shattered. A 19-month-old toddler has permanently lost his eyesight after allegedly receiving the wrong medication at the Banda Civil Hospital.
The incident unfolded when Indraraj Vishwakarma, a resident of Bhusa Kamalpur, brought his son, Vinay, to the hospital for treatment of a cold, cough, and redness in the eyes.
-
The Fatal Error: According to the heartbroken father, the on-duty pediatrician mistakenly administered a cough/nasal clearing drop into the infant's eyes instead of the appropriate ophthalmic medicine.
-
Irreversible Damage: Instead of improving, the child's condition rapidly worsened over a few hours. The family eventually rushed the toddler to AIIMS in Bhopal. There, specialists delivered the tragic news that a severe infection caused by the wrong medication had permanently damaged his eyes, leaving him blind for life.
-
Investigation Ordered: Following massive outrage, the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) has constituted a three-member inquiry committee to thoroughly investigate these serious allegations of medical negligence.
While the medical staff claims that severe malnutrition can also cause vision complications, the probe will determine if the prescribed medicine was dispensed incorrectly or administered wrongly by the staff. What punishment do you think should be given for such life-altering negligence?
