Who is Rekha Gupta?
Born on July 19, 1974, Rekha Gupta has deep roots in Delhi’s political scene. From a young age, she was inspired by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which influenced her commitment to public service.
Rekha's political journey began in her student days. She became the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996, a role that propelled her into active politics. She also served as the General Secretary of DUSU and the General Secretary of the BJP's Delhi state unit.
Before becoming Chief Minister, Rekha served as a Delhi Councillor from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007 and was re-elected in 2012. In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, she won the Shalimar Bagh constituency, defeating AAP's Vandana Kumari by a significant margin of 29,595 votes.
Rekha has also held several important positions within the BJP, including General Secretary of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha and a member of the party's National Executive.
Why Rekha Gupta?
Several factors contributed to the BJP's choice of Rekha Gupta as Chief Minister. Her long-standing involvement in Delhi politics, starting from her student days, has given her a deep understanding of the city's issues. She has experience in local governance as a councillor and has also worked within the BJP at various levels.
Rekha's victory in the Shalimar Bagh constituency demonstrated her ability to connect with the people of Delhi. Furthermore, appointing her as Chief Minister is a significant milestone for the BJP, as she is the only woman BJP Chief Minister across 21 states.
Swearing-in Ceremony
The swearing-in ceremony for Rekha Gupta and her Cabinet ministers is scheduled to take place at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, February 20, at 11 am. The oath of office will be administered by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at 12:35 pm. The event is expected to be attended by prominent BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Challenges and Opportunities
As the new Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta faces the challenge of meeting the expectations of the people of Delhi and fulfilling the BJP's promises. However, she also has the opportunity to bring positive change to the city and improve the lives of its residents. With her experience, dedication, and the support of her party, Rekha Gupta is poised to lead Delhi into a new era of progress and development.
