Raped by Relative: Shocking Details Emerge in Maharashtra Doctor’s Suicide Case

A 26-year-old woman doctor working at a government hospital in Maharashtra's Satara district tragically died by suicide after alleging repeated rape and harassment by a police sub-inspector and another man over several months. The doctor, employed on a contractual basis at a hospital in Phaltan, left a suicide note written on her palm, stating that she was raped four times by the police sub-inspector, who was also her relative. The accused police officer was identified as Gopal Badane from the Phaltan City police station and has since been suspended. Another man named Prashant Bankar, a software engineer and the landlord’s son, allegedly subjected her to mental and physical harassment during the same period.

The doctor’s body was found hanging in a hotel room on the night of October 23, 2025. Her note detailed both sexual violence and ongoing abuse, which reportedly caused her immense mental distress. Despite her complaints to senior officials and reports to the police as early as June 2025, no effective action was taken to prevent the harassment. This failure to respond has sparked significant outrage among medical professionals and the public alike.

Medical associations across Maharashtra have expressed deep sorrow and anger as well as concern about the safety of doctors working in government hospitals. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have called for an impartial and transparent investigation into the case, including demands to arrest the accused and transfer the case to the CID. They further stress the urgent need for systems to protect medical staff from harassment and mental health support for those under severe workplace or personal stress.

This case also highlights broader issues of sexual violence and harassment in Maharashtra. While the overall crimes against women decreased slightly in 2024, statistics revealed a rising number of rape and molestation cases. In 2024, Maharashtra registered 7,940 rapes compared to 7,524 in 2023, and molestation cases also increased. These numbers underscore the persistent challenges women face in seeking justice and protection from violence.

Beyond this tragic incident, the case brings attention to the pressing need for safeguarding mechanisms not only for women professionals in healthcare but for all women vulnerable to abuse in society. It calls for stronger law enforcement accountability, prompt judicial processes, and mental health resources to support survivors and prevent such heart-wrenching outcomes.

The Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has personally intervened, and the police have arrested one accused while searching for the other. However, many believe that the suicide of a young doctor under such circumstances is a grave warning about systemic failings and the urgent need for reforms in harassment prevention, victim support, and policing transparency.

In summary, the heartbreaking death of the young doctor is a tragic reminder of the ongoing challenges of sexual violence and harassment in India. It amplifies calls for fair investigations, protective laws, and community awareness to ensure that victims receive justice and no other life is lost to such cruelty and neglect.
