Weather Alert: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra to Witness Heavy Rains, Possible Disruptions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka over the next two to three days. Additionally, the IMD has issued warnings for parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, indicating that a depression over these states has strengthened into a deep depression.

Deep Depression Movement and Impact

According to the IMD, the deep depression over eastern Rajasthan is expected to move west-southwest, impacting southern Rajasthan and Gujarat, and is likely to reach Saurashtra, Kutch, and parts of Pakistan by August 29. Another low-pressure system has been identified over Bangladesh and nearby Gangetic West Bengal, which is predicted to intensify and move towards Gangetic West Bengal, northern Odisha, and Jharkhand within the next two days.

Red Alert Issued for Multiple Regions

The weather office has issued a red alert, indicating extremely heavy rainfall, for regions including eastern and southern Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch until August 29. Other areas expected to receive significant rainfall over the next two days include Jharkhand, Odisha, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gangetic West Bengal, and the Konkan region. The IMD has also warned of strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph in southern Rajasthan on August 27.

Strong Winds and Heavy Rain in Gujarat

Gujarat, neighboring Pakistan, northern Maharashtra, and the northeast Arabian Sea are expected to experience gusty winds up to 60 kmph on August 27 and 28. The heavy rainfall has already disrupted daily life in Gujarat, flooding low-lying areas. In response, the state education department has declared holidays for primary schools across the state.

Government Response and Precautions

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel conducted a virtual meeting with district collectors, police superintendents, and senior officials from major cities to assess the situation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with the Chief Minister and assured additional support, including central forces for rescue and relief efforts if needed. Authorities have relocated hundreds of people to safer locations due to rising water levels in rivers and dams. The public is urged to stay indoors and avoid water bodies.

Rough Sea Conditions and Travel Warnings

The IMD has also forecasted rough to very rough sea conditions along the coasts of Gujarat, Pakistan, and northern Maharashtra until August 30. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during this period. Additionally, the public is advised to avoid waterlogged areas, monitor traffic updates before travelling, and be prepared for potential localised flooding, road closures, and urban waterlogging.
