A 37-year-old man, identified as Sayad Ishaan Bukhari alias Ishaan Bukhari alias Dr Ishaan Bukhari, hailing from Kashmir's Kupwara, was arrested by the Odisha Police Special Task Force (STF) for allegedly ‘faking’ his identity as an Army doctor and even a PMO official to fool and cheat people.
The arrest took place in Neulpur village in the Jajpur district on Friday, December 15, following a tip received by the STF.
The accused has been impersonating various roles, including a Neuro Specialist, an Army Doctor, and an officer in the PMO. Over 100 forged documents, such as medical degree certificates from institutions like Cornel University (USA) and the Canadian Health Services Institute have been seized from him.
He has been arrested with numerous items, including affidavits, bonds, ATM cards, blank checks, Aadhaar cards, and visiting cards, confiscated by the police.
Odisha Police STF IG JN Pankaj conveyed that the accused, Ishaan Bukhari, was linked to individuals in Kerala and Pakistan. He held US and Canadian Medical Certificates, falsely portrayed himself as a PMO officer and NIA personnel. He has been accused of engaging in anti-national activities and has been living in Odisha since 2018.
Pankaj further disclosed that the accused had married at least 6-7 women from different parts of India, including Kashmir, UP, Maharashtra, and Odisha. The police official highlighted that while impersonating a doctor with international degrees, the accused was also involved in multiple romantic relationships with several women.
According to Pankaj, the accused is wanted by Kashmir Police in connection with a case of cheating and forgery, with a pending non-bailable warrant against him.
With ties to anti-national elements, the accused necessitates a thorough investigation to ascertain his specific role. Mr. Pankaj stressed the presence of substantial evidence indicating the accused's involvement in fraudulent activities. While it is early to confirm his participation in potential terror plans, his connections with Pakistan is under investigation. The angle of him acting as a Pakistani spy is not dismissed, although the current evidence is limited. The STF maintains ongoing communication with the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been filed, and a joint team from Punjab, Kashmir, and Odisha will conduct the interrogation, stated the STF Inspector General.
