on Friday, a court in Qatar has granted India's request to review the death sentence imposed on eight former Indian Navy officers who were apprehended by the country last year.
On October 26, the Qatari court declared that these Indians will be executed.
The ministry of external affairs conveyed shock at the decision and gave the assurance that the government was considering all available legal avenues.
In 2022, eight veteran Indian Navy soldiers who were employed by a defense services business were taken into custody by Qatari authorities.
Since then, the men have been kept in solitary confinement without the families of the prisoners being informed by the Qatari authorities of the reason behind their arrest.
Spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry Arindam Bagchi stated on November 16 that India is in communication with the Qatari authorities over the issue and that the government will keep providing the former Navy officers with all legal and consular support.
"There, a court procedure is presently handling the case. Arindam Bagchi stated last week in his weekly media conference that an appeal has been filed in the Court of Appeal in Qatar.Considering the delicate nature of the situation, I would once more implore everyone to refrain from speculating," he stated.
After they were hired by a Middle Eastern firm, eight former Indian Navy officers were imprisoned by Qatar in August 2022 on suspicion of serving as spies for Israel. The former officers were taken into custody by the Qatari intelligence agency on August 30, 2022, from Doha. They included Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh.
The Navy veterans' bail requests were repeatedly denied by Qatari authorities. The Court of First Instance of Qatar announced the death penalty in October of this year.
