The Punjab government has announced a three-day closure of educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities, both government and private. This decision aims to ensure student safety during this tense period. On 8th May, many parts of Punjab were under drone attack by Pakistan, and the decision comes after Punjab had to announce a complete blackout due to the attack. Indian defence system ensured that no drone was able to cause any destruction, as the drones were taken out by the Indian Defence System.
The closure will impact over thousands of institutions across Punjab, affecting lakhs of students. Educational boards have been directed to reschedule any examinations or assessments planned during this period. The Punjab Education Department has issued a detailed circular, instructing all schools and colleges to strictly follow the orders and remain shut until further notice if the situation worsens. Online classes too have been suspended as part of the state-wide precautionary measures. Teachers have also been told to stay on standby for emergency communication and guidance as needed.
Police leave cancelled, Forces on alert
The state has also cancelled all police leaves due to ongoing tensions with Pakistan and has asked every personnel to report for duty immediately. Police have been deployed in sensitive areas, with intensified patrolling and surveillance measures in place.
Punjab Police, in coordination with central forces, has increased security at key infrastructure locations, including airports, railway stations, government buildings, and power grids. Barricading and checking points have been set up at major junctions to ensure law and order. The Home Department has also instructed all district commissioners and SSPs to remain in constant touch with intelligence agencies and immediately act on any suspicious activity. Drone surveillance and mobile patrolling units have also been deployed in key zones to prevent any breaches.
A blackout was observed in most parts of Punjab
After the attacks from Pakistan, many parts of Punjab were under complete blackout. It was announced that Gurdaspur will be under full blackout on 8th but after the attacks by Pakistan a blackout was observed in major districts across Punjab including Amritsar, Mohali, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Bathinda. Residents were advised to switch off all the lights and avoid going outside their houses. Emergency protocols were activated to deal with any potential threats. The blackout is being seen as a strategic measure to make it difficult for drones or air-based weapons to navigate using city lights as visual targets. Hospitals and emergency services have been told to operate on backup power and keep essential staff on duty round the clock. Essential stores and pharmacies have been asked to remain functional only in daytime under emergency guidelines.
Authorities urge Calm and Cooperation
While the tension remains high between India and Pakistan, the authorities have urged the people to stay calm, follow official advisories, and avoid spreading rumors. The government has assured the citizens that they are closely monitoring the situation and will take further steps if needed to ensure the safety of the residents.
