Sandeep Thapar, Shiv Sena (Punjab) leader, was seriously injured on Friday after being attacked by four men wielding swords, and he had to be taken to the hospital. According to the police, the four attackers were Nihangs who were waiting outside to ambush the politician, allegedly over his controversial remarks against Sikhs. The incident occurred in broad daylight on a crowded route outside the Punjabi city of Ludhiana Civil Hospital.
According to the police, two of the three suspects have been taken into custody after being identified. The Shiv Sena leader, Sandeep Thapar, is shown in a video of the incident being viciously attacked by two 'Nihangs,' members of a warrior Sikh sect who are typically clothed in blue and carry traditional weapons. A third person, with the assistance of others, manages to keep the policeman away from them.
Rajiv Tandon, the chief of the Shiv Sena (Punjab), stated that Thapar was riding his two-wheeler while a gunman was seated pillion. He claimed that the attack occurred a few days after Thapar's security detail was reduced from three to one person. The gunman accompanying the Shiv Sena leader, ASI Sukhwant Singh, rushed the heavily bleeding Thapar to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where he remains critically ill.
Three attackers have been identified as Sarabjit Singh Saba (34), of Tibba Road; Harjot Singh alias Jota (30), of Bhamiyan; and Tehal Singh Ladi of Amritsar, according to statements made at a joint press conference by Ludhiana Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal and Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Ravjot Kaur Grewal. They were residing close to Transport Nagar at the Shiv Shakti colony at Nihang Sikhs Chhawni.
According to Grewal, a police squad pursued the suspects, capturing Sarabjit and Harjot from Fatehgarh Sahib and seizing Thapar's two-wheeler as well. The investigation to find the attack's motivation is underway. "The on-duty gunman who was with Thapar has been the subject of an inquiry and will shortly be suspended," stated Chahal.
Along with the party officials, members of several Hindu organizations protested at the DMCH, waving placards critical of the Punjab government and police. The Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the home portfolio, was called to resign by the BJP in response to the incident.
