Pratyush Ranjan/Ashisha Singh Rajput, PTI Fact Check: After taking the oath of office as a Member of Parliament (MP), Yusuf Pathan, a former Indian cricket player, and TMC leader, is seen in a video that has gone viral, allegedly chanting "Jai Gujarat" only. After some research, the PTI Fact Check Desk discovered that this video had been altered and taken out of context.
On June 25, a video appeared on social media platform X, which was formerly Twitter. It purportedly showed Pathan chanting "Jai Gujarat" while taking an oath. The post, which had 32,000 views and more than 1,150 likes, attacked Pathan for neglecting Bengali voters. It gained a lot of attention.
After looking into it, PTI Fact Check Desk examined the video using the InVid tool and discovered keyframes that suggested the clip had been edited. It was evident that the widely shared video had been edited selectively when compared to the original footage that News18 Bihar Jharkhand had uploaded on June 25.
In the original clip, Yusuf Pathan ends his oath by saying, "Jai Hind, Jai Bangla, Jai Gujarat," signifying all the places he has ties to. The viral version omitted this important passage, leading viewers to believe that Pathan was biased toward a single area.
Despite the allegations, Pathan, who defeated BJP candidate Nirmal Kumar Saha and Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to win the West Bengal Lok Sabha seat from Baharampur, had chanted "Jai Gujarat" in addition to "Jai Hind" and "Jai Bangla."
After a thorough investigation, the PTI Fact Check Desk has determined that the widely shared video is manipulated to distort Pathan's actual words spoken while testifying.
