Paw-tecting Strays: Bengaluru's Stray Dogs Get 5-in-1 Vaccine Boost from BBMP

In a pioneering move, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to introduce a groundbreaking five-in-one vaccine for stray dogs, safeguarding them from five diseases, including the highly contagious canine distemper virus.

The BBMP will soon initiate a tender process to acquire the vaccine through e-procurement, alongside their existing anti-rabies vaccination efforts. This innovative program sets a precedent, as no other municipality in the country has implemented such a vaccination regimen.

The vaccine, known as DHPPI, offers protection against canine distemper virus, two types of adenovirus (hepatitis and kennel cough), Parainfluenza, and parvovirus, typically administered to pets. The contract will be awarded to the lowest bidder. Additionally, the BBMP plans to expand the number of anti-birth control centers within the city.

BBMP Special Commissioner (Health and Animal Husbandry) Trilok Chandra explained that approximately 1.4 lakh vials are required to vaccinate stray dogs effectively. This initiative aims to curb the spread of diseases among treated dogs, further highlighting BBMP's unique commitment to dog welfare.

Following vial procurement, the BBMP intends to administer the vaccine by capturing and vaccinating the dogs. To avoid redundancy, the BBMP is considering implementing geo-tagging or microchip insertion for vaccinated and sterilized dogs.

According to a senior official in the Animal Husbandry Department, the feasibility of microchip and geo-tagging is under scrutiny. About 150 dogs in the Hebbal department campus will undergo geo-tagging and observation for 20 days. The feasibility of geo-tagging will depend on the dogs' response, as irritation caused by the neck belt may necessitate its removal.

Concurrently, microchips will be inserted into 100 dogs, storing vaccination and sterilization details for easy access by officials when scanned.
