Pressing the panic button to stop escalators in Mumbai’s railway station is not the same as pulling the chain to stop a train. The train can be restarted immediately but these escalators cannot be started the same way they were stopped. Railway officials need to call technicians to restart these escalators. There is a whole procedure that is followed to restart it from the technical cabin below the escalator. According to railway officials, 90% of the escalators at railway stations in the city stop working on most days because passengers push the panic/emergency button.
Railway officials have shown their concern about this issue and are figuring out a way to resolve it. Central Railways are working on a new mechanism to restart these immediately.
The emergency button is placed just beside the railings therefore, most of the passengers misuse it either for fun or for their own convenience. Some old citizens pressed the panic button to stop it as they had never used an escalator before. Technicians had to be called to restart it all over again.
