One Dead, Several Feared Trapped After Collapse in Illegal Coal Mine in Jharkhand

At least one person has died and several others are feared to be trapped following the collapse of a coal mine during suspected illegal mining activity in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district. The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, 5 July, in the Karma area, where locals were reportedly engaged in unauthorised coal extraction.

Authorities confirmed that one body had been recovered, while search and rescue operations are ongoing amid fears that more individuals may be buried under the debris. “Rescue efforts are underway, and further casualties cannot be ruled out at this stage,” said Ashutosh Kumar Singh, the in-charge of the Kuju Police Outpost. He added that villagers were carrying out illegal mining at the time of the collapse. The district administration has dispatched a team to the site to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.

“We received word of the incident this morning and have sent officials to the location to investigate,” said Ramgarh Deputy Commissioner Faiz Aq Ahmed Mumtaz. Illegal mining remains a persistent issue in coal-rich districts of Jharkhand, often leading to fatal accidents due to unregulated excavation and poor safety conditions. This latest tragedy highlights the continuing human cost of such operations.
