One-day National Mourning on Sunday announced in India after demise of Kuwait Emir Sheikh Nawaf

On Sunday, India will observe a one-day state mourning in tribute to the late Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who passed away at 86 on Saturday, Indian Authorities announced.

The Union Home Ministry has communicated to all states that on December 17, throughout the state mourning, the national flag will be lowered to half-mast at all standard flag-flying locations across India. There will be a suspension of official entertainment on this day.

The official communication conveyed, "His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait, departed on December 16, 2023. In homage to the esteemed leader, the Indian government has designated December 17 for a one-day state mourning."

During this mourning period, the national flag will be lowered to half-mast across India on all structures where it is routinely flown, and there will be a cessation of official entertainment on that day, according to the communication.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister stated, "I am deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Royal family, the leadership, and the people of Kuwait."

Demise of Kuwait’s Emir

In an announcement aired on state television on Saturday, Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah al-Sabah, the minister of his emiri court, expressed deep sorrow about the demise of Emir at the age of 86.

He conveyed: "With great sadness and sorrow, we – the Kuwaiti people, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the friendly peoples of the world – mourn the late His Highness the emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who passed away to his Lord today."

Cause of  Death has not been revealed by authorities, but the commencement of a 40-day official mourning period and a three-day closure of government departments has been declared.
