Odisha on High Alert as Cyclone Dana Approaches: Schools Closed, Tourists Evacuated

IMD issues heavy to extremely heavy rainfall warnings in Odisha as Cyclone Dana forms over Bay of Bengal. The effect would likely be more adverse at the coastal and northern region areas where the rainfall will range between 7 cm and 20 cm. Some isolated areas might see more than 20 cm rainfall . Mayurbhanj, Cuttack, Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur are the districts on high alert.

The Cuttack district administration has sought the deployment of specifically dedicated disaster response teams ahead of the storm. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) would keep two teams ready in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) area and Niali. The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) would keep one team ready in Banki, two teams ready in Athagarh and one team ready in Salipur. The teams will be in coordination with the local administration for managing emergencies.

Precautions by Government prior to Cyclone Dana

The Odisha government had already taken some precautionary steps to minimize the impact of Cyclone Dana. These include the following:

  • Evacuation of Tourists: The tourists and the pilgrims have been asked to vacate Puri by October 23.
  • Shutting down Schools: The schools in the involved districts would be shut from October 23 to October 25.
  • Cancelled Leaves: All government employees have had their leaves cancelled from 23rd to 25th October.
  • Warnings Given to Fishermen: Fishermens have been advised not to enter the sea since there is a possibility of a cyclone.

The local authorities are also conducting awareness drives amongst the fishing community to ensure safety.

One of the worst-affected state by cyclones, Odisha witnesed "Super Cyclone" of 1999 which had killed over 10,000 people. But cyclones In recent years like cyclone Phailin, Hudhud, and Fani, the damage cause by these were limited because of better management during disasters.
