Cyclone Dana to Hit Odisha by October 24: Heavy Rains Expected

India Meteorological Department warned that a "Low Pressure Area" over the Bay of Bengal could form into a cyclonic storm titled "Cyclone Dana" by Oct 23. This storm might hit the coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal.

 

In the latest bulletin by IMD, the weather system will intensify into a depression by October 22. It is likely to move west-northwestward and will result into a full-fledged cyclonic storm by 23 October over the east-central Bay of Bengal. Director-General of IMD Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said, "Parts of Odisha may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on 23rd and 24th October". It has been predicted that the coastal area could witness up to 20 cm of rainfall on 24 and 25th of October and over 30 cm in some parts.

Government Preparations

The Odisha government has come forward with preventive measures to face Cyclone Dana. Chief Secretary fixed a meeting with senior officials to put things in order. District collectors have been asked to get the cyclone shelters ready to accommodate the residents in case a situation arises whereby people have to be evacuated.

Apart from the threats of cyclones in Odisha, Bengaluru is seen experiencing major rainfall that is causing waterlogging and snarling traffic across the city. Heavy rains compelled the Karnataka government to declare school holidays. Shimoga and Chikmagalur and some other areas are placed under an 'orange alert' as heavy rain and thunderstorms are continuing there. Heavy rain in Bengaluru has caused vehicles to get stuck in flooding, affecting commutes and Slowed down moving traffic making it difficult for people to perform their daily tasks.
