On the occasion of National Sports Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to hockey great Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary. He also led a host of politicians and sportspersons in wishing the country on this special day.
National Sports Day is a national holiday in India that is celebrated on August 29 every year to honour the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players of all time.
Kiren Rijiju, the former Sports Minister and current Union Law Minister, paid tribute to Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary and National Sports Day. He also saluted all the athletes who had played for India and brought laurels to the country.
Cricket great Sachin Tendulkar and Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra were among the sportspersons who extended their wishes on National Sports Day. Tendulkar mentioned how Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Lovely Choubey made history by winning gold in the women's four lawn bowl event at Birmingham.
"Inspired by their modest origins, they united for a lesser-known sport. With a historic gold now, they've proven that 'Age is just a number'," Tendulkar stated.
"In a nation of 1.3 billion, what's holding us back from overcoming obstacles and excelling in sports? On this National Sports Day, let's persist in our shared mission to transform India from a 'sports-loving nation' to a 'sports-playing nation'," he urged.
Former Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh, Mithali Raj, and Dinesh Karthik expressed their wishes on social media to fellow countrymen on this occasion.
"Saluting the ethos of sportsmanship today and every day! Honoured to belong to a country of exceptional champions! #NationalSportsDay," Yuvraj penned.
Olympic and Commonwealth Games medalist woman wrestler Sakshi Malik wished the nation on National Sports Day. She said that sports improve physical toughness and mental health, and she wished everyone a happy National Sports Day.
