ADGP Law and Order Ravi Shankar said, "One of the ships caught fire where some boys were there late night probably they were all partying, luckily the other boatsmen came and de-anchored that ship and let it off into the sea.”
He continued that the ship was fully loaded with both gas cylinders and diesel tanker. As a result, the fire spread to more ships that were stationed at the jetty.
“Towards the end, the Navy ship Sahara also came and assisted us and because of them we had got the fire under control. There is no loss of life at the outset. Only about 25-30 ships got gutted," Shankar added.
About forty fiber-mechanized boats totally burned, although according to police, there were no injuries or fatalities from the incident. Firefighters were summoned by locals to put out the fire. Local fishermen fear foul play and claim that unknown individuals may have purposefully set the boats on fire.
