An investigation found that Tuesday's Mathura train incident, in which an electric multiple unit (EMU) train derailed and climbed on a platform, was caused by a staff member who was using his mobile phone and was slightly drunk while operating the train, a report by PTI citing sources revealed.
A service member named Sachin entered the DTC cab (engine) while looking at his mobile, after the train pulled up to the platform, according to the Crew Voice & Video Recording System (CVVRS), per the report citing sources.
He once more got distracted with his mobile while carelessly placing his bag on the engine's throttle. According to the PTI report, the throttle moved into the forward position as a result of the bag's pressure, allowing the EMU to approach the platform. “It broke the dead end of the platform and half of the coach climbed onto the elevated portion of platform number 2, leading to breakdown of OHE (overhead wire)."
The investigation report also stated that Sachin tested positive for alcohol on a breathalyser with a reading of 47 mg/100 ml, which is regarded to be mildly intoxicated.
At 10.49 p.m., the train had reached Mathura station. Sachin entered the cab to retrieve the keys once the loco pilot was relieved of his duties and left. It started moving, broke the dead end, and half of its part climbed onto the platform within a minute of him getting in the cab.
In line with a source from the Agra Railway Division quoted in the PTI report: “He has been sent for a medical test in which his blood sample will be taken to find out the exact level of alcohol consumption."
About the incident, railways suspended five people, including Sachin. Of the four Govid Hari Sharma, is a loco pilot, and technical staff members Harbhajan Singh, Brajesh Kumar, and Kuljeet.
Tej Prakash Agrawal, Divisional Railway Manager, said, “We have suspended five persons and further detailed investigation is on."
