An unfortunate incident took place in the Goregaon West area of Mumbai in the early hours of Friday, leading to the unfortunate loss of at least seven lives and leaving two individuals in critical condition. The fire erupted at around 3:05 a.m. in a five-storey building. A total of 39 people suffered injuries, while numerous individuals were left stranded on different floors, including the terrace.
Among the injured, 25 individuals have been admitted to HBT Trauma Care Hospital, whereas 15 are currently receiving treatment at Cooper Hospital. Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar has disclosed that the building, which was constructed in 2006 as part of the Slum Rehabilitation scheme, unfortunately did not possess a firefighting system. Additionally, it appears that the lift was outdated, resulting in a considerable amount of smoke infiltrating the lift duct.
The fire, which started at the Jay Bhavani building on MG Road, was successfully extinguished by 6 a.m. The firefighting operation included the utilization of eight fire engines, five jumbo water tankers, three automatic turn tables, one turn table ladder, a quick response vehicle, and an ambulance.
Several esteemed fire officials, including the Deputy Chief Fire Officer, District Fire Officer, and Assistant Divisional Fire Officer, along with three Senior Station Officers and three Station Officers, promptly attended to the incident. This occurrence serves as a solemn reminder of the crucial significance of strictly abiding by safety protocols and implementing sufficient fire prevention measures, particularly in highly populated regions.
