In the past 24 hours, security forces in Manipur recovered 12 weapons, 6 ammunition, and at least 8 explosives during search operations in five districts: Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Churachandpur.
The Manipur police said in a press release on Saturday that in addition to finding weapons and ammunition, the security forces have also detained two people and recovered 27 kg of opium.
“Yesterday (August 11, 2023), security forces detected 25 packets of suspected opium weighing about 27 kg and arrested two persons,” it said.
The situation in Manipur is normal over the past 24 hours, according to the police, with scattered shooting incidents and protestor gatherings.
The police stated that several checkpoints had been set up in various areas, both in the hill and the valley and that over 1,580 people have been arrested in different regions for offenses.
Giving information regarding the flow of supplies to the violence-hit state, the police said, “The movement of 92 vehicles on NH-37 and 112 vehicles on NH 2 with essential items have been ensured. Strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations, and a security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement.”
In the meantime, the curfew has been loosened in the Imphal West, Imphal East, and Bishnupur districts from 5 am to 5 pm. Likewise, there is no curfew in six other hill districts as well.
Since the ethnic conflict between the Metei and Kuki communities broke out on May 3, mobs have invaded police stations and armories, looting 4,000 firearms and 500,000 rounds of ammunition.
