Manipur unrest continues - 4 family members of a soldier taken captive

Tuesday saw unrest in the outskirts of Manipur's Kangpokpi and Imphal West districts. Five Kuki-Zomi community members were kidnapped, and later in the day, at least nine Meitei community members, including two police officers, were hurt in gunfire.

The first firing incident happened early in the morning in close proximity to Maphou, which is on the border between Kangpokpi district and Imphal East.

Five Kuki-Zomi individuals, four of whom are Army soldier's relatives, were kidnapped by unidentified miscreants while they were travelling in a vehicle near Kangchup Chinkhong, which is close to the border between the Meitei-dominated Imphal West and the Kuki-Zomi-dominated Kangpokpi, according to a security official.

Although one of the five was saved, the official said that as of Tuesday night, it was still unknown where the other four were. Manglun Haokip, a 65-year-old resident of Bolkot village, was the one who was rescued. He was admitted to the military hospital in Leimakhong due to major injuries he had incurred.

There were at least nine people injured in the shootout that took place in that region, including two police officers and two women from the Meitei group, on Tuesday.

A total of nine injured individuals have been admitted: six to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and three to an Imphal private hospital.
