On Wednesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she is ready to quit her position as protests by junior doctors in West Bengal continue unabated. The protests have refused to die down even after the government relented on several demands, including transferring the case to the CBI and even joining the protests herself. Whereas, again, there is a primary concern that even the alleged rapist and murderer of a lady doctor at RG Kar Medical College has not been arrested, and confidence in the investigation process remains low among the people.
Public Outrage and Mistrust
These continuous protests have given rise to a debate on justice and public safety, with particular emphasis on women's safety in society. A lot of people think that protests are for seeking justice, but they do not understand how much frustration is embedded in the citizens who are concerned about the safety of their dear ones. The situation has brought under question the ability of the government and law-keeping authorities to protect its citizens, specifically women, in modern society.
Why Did Mamata Banerjee Not Act Sooner?
One question that comes to everybody's mind is why Mamata Banerjee failed to take immediate action to resolve the situation. The Chief Minister could have sat down with the doctors in the beginning and negotiated a peaceful resolution, but at that time, the government responded to protesters with things like deploying water cannons. This approach added fuel to the fire and allowed opposition parties like the BJP to politicize the issue turning the whole episode into a fiasco.
The controversy only escalated over the fact that Banerjee transferred the case to the CBI well past the deadline. Again, questions have been raised as to why construction work at the site of the hospital was allowed barely days after the incident; why the victim's family was informed late and that too it was a case of suicide; why people like Sanjoy Roy continued in their posts despite criminal complaints against them.
Demands for Accountability
There is a growing demand for explanations. Why was Sandip Ghosh transferred out immediately after he had submitted his resignation? Why was Sanjoy Roy allowed to stay in police barracks when there was a criminal complaint against him? Everyone has started pointing fingers at the ruling party, Trinamool Congress, and linking it to corruption allegations against Dr. Sandip Ghosh. The public wants to know why Mamata Banerjee is considering resigning now. Is she seriously concerned about ensuring justice or is it political gimmickry?
Failed Negotiation with Junior Doctors
An effort to end the standoff between protesting doctors and the West Bengal government failed Thursday when junior doctors declined to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unless the meeting was broadcast live. The doctors have been in protest since their colleague died, asking for transparency in all actions of the government.
While the state government has agreed to record the session for transparency, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant said there was no question of live-streaming. The Chief Minister has been waiting for more than an hour and a half. We have tried to explain to the doctors that their demand for a live stream cannot be met. But, we are ready to document the entire session. There should be a limit to such demands
, Pant told reporters, urging the doctors to reconsider.

Deadlock: Mamata Banerjee's Stance
Visibly piqued but trying to placate an embattled doctors' agitation movement, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that she was willing to forgive the protesting doctors despite the standoff. I tried thrice to hold talks with the junior doctors to end the RG Kar stalemate. I am still saying that I will not take any action against them for not coming and making us wait for two hours. I will forgive them because being elders, it is our responsibility to forgive our younger ones
, Banerjee said.
She also apologized to the people of Bengal for the continuing crisis. I apologize to the people of Bengal who expected an end to the RG Kar impasse today. I am ready to resign from my post for the sake of the people. I don't want the chair; I want justice (for the deceased) and treatment for the people (patients),
the Chief Minister added.
The Road Ahead
The world is watching this drama unfolding in West Bengal, and it remains to be seen what course Mamata Banerjee will take. Resign and let new leadership emerge, or stay on and work for the delivery of justice in the RG Kar case? The coming days are going to be crucial for the development of this socio-political crisis.
