Maha Kumbh Zone in Prayagraj Officially Becomes a New District

In a significant move ahead of the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela, the Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has announced the formation of a new district specifically for the event. The newly designated district, called Maha Kumbh Mela, will focus on streamlining the administration and management of the upcoming religious gathering, which is scheduled to begin in January 2025.

Government Notification and Powers of District Authorities

The formal announcement was made on Sunday, with the Uttar Pradesh government issuing a notification to establish the Maha Kumbh Mela District. This decision comes in anticipation of the grand event, which will attract millions of devotees. As per the government order, the district will encompass specific revenue villages and the entire parade area, as detailed in an annexure.

The Mela Adhikari, who will oversee the event, will hold extensive powers, including those of an Executive Magistrate, District Magistrate, and Additional District Magistrate. This authority will extend to the implementation of the Indian Civil Defense Code and the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code, ensuring efficient governance during the event. The order also empowers the district's administrative staff to exercise all functions of a District Collector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Uttar Pradesh on December 13, 2024, to review preparations for the Maha Kumbh 2025. During his visit, Modi is expected to inaugurate several development projects related to the event's infrastructure and logistics.

Event Scheduled for January 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. The 2025 edition is slated to begin on January 13 and conclude on February 26, attracting devotees from across India and abroad. The event is expected to be a major cultural milestone, showcasing India’s rich religious heritage.
