Background of Ladakh's Union Territory
Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019 following the revocation of Article 370, which previously granted special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This decision also resulted in the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, one of which is Ladakh. As a UT, Ladakh falls under the direct administrative control of the Home Ministry.
Prime Minister's Support
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the people of Ladakh. He highlighted that the creation of the five new districts would lead to better governance and bring services and opportunities closer to the residents of Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

Ladakh's Expanded Administrative Structure
Prior to this announcement, Ladakh had only two districts, Leh and Kargil, both managed by their respective autonomous district councils. With the addition of these five new districts, Ladakh's total number of districts will increase to seven, paving the way for more localized governance and development.
