BEST bus rams into traffic, kills 6, over 50 injured

A horrific accident took place on Monday night when a BEST bus crashed into pedestrians and vehicles on SG Barve Marg in Kurla West, resulting in six fatalities and 49 injuries. The bus, which was headed to Andheri, lost control and collided with 30-40 vehicles over a 100-meter stretch before crashing into the RCC column of the Solomon Building, damaging its compound wall.

Maharashtra Government’s Response

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of those who died in the accident. The treatment costs for the injured will be covered by the BEST and BMC.

Forensic Investigation Underway

The forensic team has arrived at the site to investigate the cause of the accident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5), Ganesh Gawde, confirmed the details, saying that the bus lost control and hit several vehicles. Initially, 25 people were reported injured, and four others were confirmed dead. The bus driver has been taken into custody for further questioning.

Injured Rushed to Hospitals

The injured victims were immediately taken to nearby hospitals, including BMC-run Bhabha Hospital in Kurla and Sion Hospital. Dr. Padmashri Ahire of Bhabha Hospital reported that nearly 25 injured people were brought in, with two already dead upon arrival and another passing away later.

CCTV Footage of the Incident

CCTV footage has surfaced, showing the speeding bus ramming into parked vehicles, sparking panic among bystanders. People can be seen running in all directions in a desperate attempt to escape.

 

Shiv Sena MLA Dilip Lande has suggested that brake failure could have been the cause of the crash. He stated that the bus driver may have panicked and pressed the accelerator after losing control, leading to the collision with multiple vehicles and pedestrians.
