Kashi has a Holi played with ashes

Varanasi’s Harishchandra Ghat has an age-old traditional celebration called ‘Masan Holi’ in which Lord Shiva devotees play Holi with pyre ashes. The celebration marks Rangbhari Ekadashi, a celebration to mark the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

While Holi is a festival of colours, ‘Masan Holi’ is a unique festival that is celebrated only in the ghats of Kashi, five days before the onset of Holi. This marked the enthusiastic participation of over 50,000 devotees at the Varanasi Ghat.
The celebration takes place at cremation grounds as it is believed that Lord Shiva visits the ghat to take a bath and celebrate Holi with his devotees. The event is filled with saints, seers and devotees from all over the country to seek salvation.
