Justice Sanjiv Khanna Sworn in as India’s 51st Chief Justice

Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India by President Draupadi Murmu today. The ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the present Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sitting judges from the Supreme Court and High Courts, and retired judges were prensent. Within an hour of taking his oath the Chief Justice joined Supreme Court to preside over his first list of cases, wherein Justice Sanjay Kumar became a member.

Justice Khanna's recent orders include granting interim bail to former Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi Liquor Policy case. Justice Khanna’s six-month tenure will be lasting until May 13, 2025. Some of the key issues he would cover will include pendency in the Supreme Court and the continued integration of technology in the administration of justice.

His collegium is likely to focus on diversifying and enlarging the bench with three justices awaiting joining the Supreme Court. Constitution Benches may be impaneled to decide on major issues such as Money Bills amendment in financial enactments provisions and protection of fundamental religious practices. Justice Khanna will revisit an important case in criminal law which had delayed the criminalization process of non-consensual marital relations due to paucity of time.

Career of Justice Khanna

Justice Khanna’s journey Started as an advocate in Delhi’s district courts in 1983, he was specialized in constitutional, taxation, and environmental law. Later he served as senior standing counsel for both the Income Tax Department and Delhi. Then got Elevated directly to the Supreme Court in 2019.
