Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024: The Final Phase of Voting Underway

The third and final phase of the much-watched Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections started on Tuesday. The first election after the abrogation of Article 370 in the year 2019 has generated immense interest across the country. Nearly 40 constituencies are situated in the regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Polls are being held with tight security measures, early reports say it is an enthusiastic turnout. The final phase voting is going on in the region. BJP, PDP, National Conference, and Congress have all been campaigning with great intensity, focusing on the core issues of J&K like, terrorism, and scraping of Article 370.

  • Samba: 13.31%
  • Udhampur: 14.23%
  • Kathua: 13.09%

Voter Turnout Till 9 A.M. of the poll day, an aggregate voter turnout of 11.60% was recorded. The turnout is regionally varying as some regions have high voter turnouts than the others.

 Final Phase of Elections in J&K

Voter Turnout: More than 39 lakh voters would be exercising their franchise in the 40 constituencies, wherein voting for which 5,060 polling stations have been established to ensure smooth elections. Voting will end at 7 PM.

Prominent Candidates: The third phase has several prominent candidates in the fray, including: 

  • Sajjad Lone, chairman of People's Conference
  • Raman Bhalla (R S Pura),
  • Basharat Bukhari (Wagoora-Kreeri)
  • Choudhary Lal Singh (Basohli)

Jammu Deputy Commissioner Ramesh Kumar confirmed that all necessary arrangements were made at polling stations. He stated, “Around 12% of votes have been cast by 9 am, and voting is going smoothly without any issues.”

It would be the first time that Pakistani refugees, Valmiki Samaj, and the Gorkha community are going to vote after the abrogation of Article 370. This makes this election quite crucial for the region. Security deployment, Due to the nature of this election, high security deployment has been done in Jammu and Kashmir, and all the arrangements have been made by the authorities in such a way that the voting process takes place peacefully and security forces have been stationed on every sensitive location.

Results : The official results will be declared on October 8 to form a new government in Jammu and Kashmir.
