ISRO is to launch the second batch of 36 satellites for UK-based OneWeb with its rocket LVM3 from Sriharikota on March 26 morning. The first round of the OneWeb ISRO mission launched 36 satellites on October 23, 2022, from the Sriharikota launch station in Andhra Pradesh. The latest launch will be the 18th launch for OneWeb which already has 582 satellites in orbit.
The commercial arm of ISRO, NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) had a contract with NSIL to launch 72 satellites in space of which 36 satellites were launched in October last year. The March 26 launch will complete the contract which earned NSIL a launch fee of over Rs 1,000 crore.
OneWeb Technologies is UK based satellite communications provider providing internet solutions around the world. It is backed by Bharti Group, the owners of telecommunications giant Bharti Airtel. OneWeb plans to launch communication services in India and is in talks with the regulatory authorities. OneWeb is already providing internet from space in Alaska, Canada, the UK, Northern Europe and Canada.
