In the Kalakote region of Rajouri, Jammu, there is an ongoing and intense counter-terrorism operation characterized by a heavy exchange of fire between terrorists and security forces, as reported by Defence spokesperson Lt Col Suneel Bartwal. He emphasized the deployment of advanced technology for monitoring terrorist activities. These operations were initiated based on specific intelligence received on October 1, regarding the suspected presence of individuals in the area.
According to official sources, security forces suspect the presence of two to three heavily armed terrorists in the jungle area where the operation is taking place. The encounter began on Monday evening during a search operation in the forested region of Kalakote.
In collaboration with the police, the Army cordoned off the Broh and Soom forest belt in Kalakote early on Monday, acting on information about suspicious activity. As the search operation progressed, it transitioned into an encounter when the terrorists, concealed in the area, initiated gunfire in an attempt to evade the cordon.
Recent counter-terrorism operations have witnessed significant success. On September 12 and 13, security forces eliminated two terrorists in the Narla area. Additionally, Northern Army commander Lt General Dwivedi revealed at the North Tech Symposium on September 11 that nearly 200 terrorists were poised across the LoC in Pakistan, waiting for an opportunity to infiltrate. The vigilant troops deployed at the borders are striving to neutralize them preemptively.
Over the past nine months, the region has seen the elimination of 47 terrorists, with 37 of them being foreign militants and nine locals. Since January, the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch have experienced a surge in terrorist activities.
These twin border districts, located south of Pir Panjal, witnessed three major terror attacks on January 1 in Dhangri, April 20 at Tota Gali in Poonch, and May 5 in the Kandi forests of Rajouri. Notably, on September 12, a terrorist was neutralized, and a brave soldier along with an army dog 'Kent' lost their lives in the line of duty. Additionally, four security personnel, including three soldiers and a special police officer, sustained injuries during the encounter.
These operations reflect the resolute efforts of the security forces in safeguarding the region from terrorist threats. The use of advanced technology and intelligence-driven strategies underscores the commitment to maintaining peace and security in the area.
According to recent sources, 2 army personnel have been injured till now.
