A 19-year-old Indian girl, Gursimran Kaur, was found dead in a walk-in oven at a Walmart in Halifax on October 19. Her charred remains were discovered in the bakery section of the store by her mother, who lost contact with her for about an hour before the grim discovery was made. First responders were called to the scene around 9:30 PM after reports of a “sudden death” emerged.
Gursimran Kaur had moved to Canada with aspirations for a promising future. She had worked at Walmart for two years alongside her mother, while her father and brother remain in India. Efforts are underway to bring them to Canada during this difficult time.
Community Support for the Family
In the wake of this tragedy, the Maritime Sikh Society Executive has established a GoFundMe campaign to support Kaur's family, which has raised over ₹1.1 crore to date. In a statement, the organization expressed profound gratitude for the donations, stating, “Your kindness and generosity have been a source of strength for the family as they navigate through this tragedy.” They added that the contributions would assist the family as they face the challenges ahead.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are conducting a thorough examination of the walk-in oven, which is typically used in large-scale bakeries to dry, bake, or cure products in batches on wheeled racks. The Walmart store has remained closed since the incident, and the company is reportedly providing grief counselling for its employees, as reported by the Canadian Express.
