Indian Army comes to the rescue of stranded tourists in Sikkim

On Saturday afternoon, approximately, 400 tourists, including 142 women and 50 children got stuck while returning from Nathu La and Tsomgo (Changgu) Lake in Sikkim because of heavy snowfall. Roads were fully blocked.

Nathula Pass is located on the India-China border and is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Tsomgo Lake is a glacial lake located at an altitude of 12,310 feet and is a popular destination for tourists. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. No doubt these are one of the most beautiful destinations in India but it could be dangerous as well.

As soon as this news reached the Sikkim Government, the army was immediately sent for the rescue operation. They called this rescue mission, 'Operation Himrahat.' All the tourists were taken to a safe area and were provided shelter. They were provided with warm clothing, medical aid, and hot meals as well.

The Army's General Reserve Engineering Force dozers got the roads to Gangtok open by 9 am the next day.
