India is set to receive more than 100 cheetahs from South Africa as part of an ambitious project to help restore the big cat population in the country.
According to the agreement, South Africa will transfer the cheetahs to India over the course of the next decade. The cheetahs are expected to be released in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh in February 2023, as the park is abundant in prey and grasslands. Scientists believe that the cheetahs will successfully adapt to their new home and prey base in India.
Cheetahs are important in India for several reasons. They are keystone species, meaning they play a critical role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem they live in. They are also a flagship species, meaning they serve as a symbol and ambassador for conservation efforts in the area. Additionally, their presence can be used as an indicator of the health of the ecosystem.
