India's First Female Supreme Court Judge, Justice Fatima Beevi died at 96

 

Justice Fathima Beevi, a former governor of Tamil Nadu and the first female judge of the Supreme Court, passed away on Thursday at a private hospital in this city, according to official sources. She was 96.

State Health Minister Veena George expressed her condolences on Justice Beevi's passing, stating that it was a very terrible death.

According to the minister, Justice Beevi made history as the first female governor of Tamil Nadu and as the first female justice of the Supreme Court.

"With numerous records under her belt, she was a courageous lady. She was a character who demonstrated via her own life that determination and a sense of purpose can triumph over any hardship, according to a statement released by George.

In addition to shattering stereotypes, Fathima Beevi made history by becoming the first female justice of the Supreme Court. Her impressive career spanned beyond the courts; from 1997 to 2001, she held the office of Governor of Tamil Nadu. She was also a notable member of the Central Human Rights Commission and the first chairman of the Commission for Backward Classes, both of which had significant roles.

Justice Fathima Beevi's exceptional accomplishments were acknowledged in 2023 when she was recognized with the esteemed Kerala Prabha Award, a mark of her commitment and influence on the community.

In her sincere condolences, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted Justice Fathima Beevi's extraordinary contribution to the advancement of women's rights. He praised her extraordinary journey, which included overcoming obstacles women faced in the classroom and rising to the top of the judiciary.
